Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup low-fat milk or non-dairy milk
  • 1 tbsp melted unsalted butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Fresh fruit (such as sliced strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)
  • Maple syrup

Instructions
 

  • Preheat a waffle iron.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, beat together egg, milk, melted butter or oil, and vanilla extract.
  • Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  • Pour batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Repeat with remaining batter.
  • Serve the cooked waffles topped with fresh fruit and maple syrup.

NOTE

To make this breakfast blood pressure-friendly, it’s recommended to use low-fat dairy or non-dairy milk and a low-sodium salt alternative. Additionally, it’s best to use unsalted butter and limit the amount of maple syrup used. To further reduce the sugar content, consider using a sugar-free or reduced sugar syrup alternative.
